What Is Blue Green Algae? And Why You Should Know

It's fun to see people's reaction when I tell them that I drink blue green algae. After distorting their face and saying something like "Eeeew," or "Yuck!", they usually ask, "What is blue green algae?" Quite simply, it is a very fine powder, which is the result of drying a special specie of micro algae, typically from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon (USA).

After reading this article, you will not only know what blue green algae is, but you will also understand why people are so excited about it. And who knows? You might find yourself sipping on a glass of blue green algae pretty soon!

What It Is

AFA describes the type of algae, and it's short for aphanizomenon flos-aquae. AFA algae is a special type of micro algae that grows naturally in Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon (USA). Although that isn't the only place it can grow, that is the only place where I personally know that it exists.

So obviously, we're not talking about just any algae here - not the stuff you see in your fish tank or your backyard pond! (just had to get that out of the way so that no one reads this article and eats algae from the fish tank - that's not only disgusting, but it's also dangerous to your health!)

Note: In this article, I am specifically talking about AFA blue green algae. However, be aware that spirulina is considered by many to be a type of blue green algae as well. You can learn more about spirulina and it's often-accompanying companion chlorella in this article about the health benefits of chlorella and spirulina.

From The Lake To Your Mouth

Blue green algae is harvested from the lake and is typically freeze dried or somehow preserved in powder form. This makes it easier to transport and easier to store. It also makes it simple to consume - simply measure out a small amount of algae powder, and mix it with water or juice. It can't get much easier than that!

Why This Stuff Rocks!

Now that we've answered the question, "What is blue green algae?" let's talk about why it is so amazing. There are few foods that naturally contain a very diverse variety of minerals, vitamins, and other good stuff. AFA blue green algae just happens to be one of them.

It is one of the best natural sources of chlorophyll, which some call the "life blood" of green plants. It is also rich in protein, good carbohydrates, and minerals like calcium, iron, and potassium, and so much more. You can read more about the nutritional value of blue green algae here.

Isn't it surprising that a substance that seems so "odd" can be so healthy? Blue green algae is packed full with a diverse variety of nutrients, vitamins, and other wonderful things. And its unique origins - a naturally occurring freshwater lake - makes it the healthiest it can possibly be. Now that we've answered your question, "What is blue green algae?", you should have a better understanding of why it is used by so many health-conscious people.
